Warning Over Impact Of MetroLink On Stephen's Green

A Government Minister is warning there will be a significant impact on St Stephen's Green in Dublin when construction starts on the MetroLink.

A station is being proposed for the east side of the park, but the Office Of Public Works says it would would have a 'direct' and 'negative' impact. They've told An Bord Pleanala the risk of damage to the park is unacceptable.

Construction work is due to begin in 2025, with a view to it beginning operations in the early 2030s.

The Minister responsible, Patrick O'Donovan, says the impact would be 'more that significant'.

''St Stephen's Green is a particularly sensitive and vulnerable place," he said.

"It's the scene of a significant 1916 element to the Easter Rising. It's also very significant in the sense that it is one of the last parts of the remaining continuation of Georgian Dublin that's fully intact.

"We have responsibility for it, and we take that responsibility very seriously."
