A leading academic has warned that changes to the Leaving Cert science syllabuses could result in pupils falling behind other countries.
UCC Professor Aine Hyland says that proposed new courses for biology, chemistry, and physics are not detailed enough and only point teachers to broad topics and learning outcomes.
She warns that similar problems will arise with other Leaving Cert syllabuses undergoing review if the matter is not addressed now.
The proposals were drawn up by the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment and sent to the Education Minister for consideration.
