Vodafone customers are being warned about a fake email doing the rounds.
Internet security firm ESET Ireland say the e-mail carries the Nemucod trojan, which downloads ransomware that encrypts data on a computer and demands ransom.
The email appears to show a bill and asks customers to click onto a link to view their phone bill:
Clicking on the link downloads a ZIP file called “Vodafone bill.zip” which in turn contains a JavaScript file called “Vodafone bill.js”. Most Windows users have file extensions turned off by default and ESET Ireland say many os us fail to spot this is a JavaScript file, one of the very common vectors for the cybercriminals to deliver their malicious payloads.
The security firm added that "Ireland has been one of the countries worst affected by Nemucod in the past, having a 50,42% detection rate in Ireland, while the world average was 15,82%."
