Vigils in memory of Ashling Murphy are being organised in Dublin, Cork, Galway and Limerick.

Women’s Aid, which is hosting a gathering outside Leinster House tomorrow afternoon, is calling for a zero tolerance approach to male violence.

It's taking place at 4pm, and people are encouraged to bring flowers and candles, and to follow public health guidelines.

Ashling was killed while jogging along the Grand Canal in Tullamore yesterday, in what's believed to be a random attack.

The 23-year-old school teacher was out exercising along a busy stretch of the canal between Boland's Lock and Digby Bridge when she was attacked at around 4pm.

The area between the canal entrance at Main Street and Boland's Lock has been sealed off ahead of a forensic investigation.

A man was being questioned by gardaí in connection with the attack, but he has since been released and is no longer a suspect in the case.

Speaking at the crime scene this morning, Superintendent Eamonn Curley said the investigation is ongoing.

He said: "No stone will be left unturned in bringing the perpetrator of this crime to justice.

"At this stage, there is no information that the victim and her killer were known to each other. From inquiries we have carried out, we believe this crime was committed by one male who acted alone."

The Justice Minister has described Ashling Murphy’s death as "every woman’s worst nightmare".
