The CSO says the jobless rate at the end of February was 11.9% as a further 2 and a half thousand people signed off the live register.
The number of people signing on at the end of last month was below 400 thousand for the first time since May 2009.
Jobs Minister Richard Bruton says the Government is determined to ensure the trend continues.
