Ukraine's president says his forces are still in control of the capital Kyiv and is appealing to the country's "friends" abroad to join the fight.

Volodymyr Zelensky appeared in a social media video earlier to counter claims he had taken up an American offer to evacuate, as Russian forces descend on the city.

A block of flats is among the latest targets - though Kyiv officials don't believe there were fatalities.

More than two dozen nations have pledged more weapons, medical supplies and other military aid to Ukraine.

The UN says over 120-thousand Ukrainian refugees have left the country since Thursday.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has appealed for new recruits to join the country's fight:

"Every friend of Ukraine who wants to join Ukraine in defending the country please come over."

"We will give you weapons."

"It will be announced very shortly how this can be done."

This above quote is NOT from the below video, a translation of the President's comments has been added below the video.

"Good morning to everyone Ukranians."

"Lately there's been a lot of fake information online, that I called on our army to lay down their arms to evacuate."

"Listen, I am here."

"We will not lay down the weapons."

"We will defend our state."

"Our weapon is our truth - and the truth is this is our land, our country and our children."

"We will defend all of that."

"That's all I wanted to tell you."

"Glory to Ukraine.

Resistance Surprised Russia

Euan MacDonald, is an Editor with the Ukrainian news website NV.UA.

He thinks Ukraine's military resistance has caught Russia by surprise:

"I've seen pictures on social media of Russian armoured personnel carriers and tanks apparently stranded in the road - having run out of fuel."

"I think the Russians had expected to move much more quickly on Kyiv and obviously be in Kyiv by now."

"They haven't managed to do that because the Ukrainian resistance has been so strong."

"So I can't tell for sure but it looks like they [Russia] are having logistics problems."
