The student's union at UCD says they're blown away by the response to their "digs drive" with over 230 homeowners offering up spare rooms.

Last week they were at Luas and DART stops asking people to consider helping students out with accommodation.

The union says some are so desperate they're considering pitching a tent on campus or sleeping in their cars.

SU President Molly Greenough says the extra rooms will help but hundreds, if not thousands of students are still searching.

The union is still urging more homeowners to come forward.

20,000 leaflets are to be handed out in a bid to bring more digs accommodation on stream.

The Irish Universities Association says colleges are doing everything they can to make the best possible use of their accommodation.

It says the government needs to help fund the construction of new student accommodation on campuses.

But it says even short-term fixes to deal with the significant shortage in beds, like modular units, would take time.

The association is calling for an increase in funding in the budget to improve student-staff ratios and services and to tackle drop-out rates.
