Twitter has been fined €450,000 by the Data Protection Commission after a breach of GDPR.
That was for failing to notify the DPC of the breach within the 72 hours window.
The Data Protection Commission says the fine imposed on Twitter for breaching GDPR legislation IS proportionate.
Graham Doyle from the DPC says there was a thorough investigation:
"It's a discreet issue around the notification at the time, and documentation that's provided."
"So it was found to be in this case that €450,000 was an effective, proportionate and dissuasive approach."
Twitter's Fine 'Meagre' - ICCL
The Irish Council For Civil Liberties says that a €450,000 fine on Twitter for breaching GDPR legislation won't make it change its behaviour.
The DPC says the fine is proportionate.
But Johnny Ryan from the ICCL says it's not enough of a deterrent:
"The idea of a fine is to stop a company of exposing all of us to risk in the future."
"It's supposed to change behaviour.
"So if you're a company that makes almost 940 million dollars in three months, then a fine of €450,000 isn't going to cut it.
"That's not going to change the behaviour."
