Trinity staff and students have criticised proposals to rebrand the University.

The plan is an attempt to modernise the college and attract more foreign students.

TCD hired a market research company to see how a rebrand of the college would be received and it appears academics, students and members of the public have taken the proposals badly.

Most people surveyed were opposed to renaming the oldest university in Ireland, Trinity College University of Dublin.

The possible name change is part of a drive to bring more foreign students in from China, India and Brazil where non EU students pay fees of around 40 thousand euro.

The survey also shows that Trinity was viewed as snobbish and elitist.

A Trinity spokesman said consultations on the proposals will continue.
