Tributes are being paid to a rising Monaghan GAA star who was killed in a crash overnight.

Brendan Og O'Dufaigh died following a two car collision at Clontibret, hours after helping his county's U20 team reach an Ulster Championship final.

The 19-year-old was driving a car which collided with another car on the N2 in Tullybuck, Clontibret at around half 11 last night.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency services.

Just hours earlier, Brendan had captained Monaghan's under 20s footballer to a victory over Donegal to reach an Ulster Championship final.

His club, Monaghan Harps, are among those paying tribute following his death, with the club chairman Jimmy Croarkin describing him as a gentleman and unbelievable role model for the younger age groups.

The N2 remains closed this afternoon near the scene while investigators examine the area.

Gardai are asking witnesses or anyone who was there at the time of the crash to come forward.
