Calls for the Luas to run 24 hours a day have been ruled out.
The National Transport Authority was asked to explore the option following a request from Transport Minister Eamon Ryan in June.
He indicated the extra capacity could have an impact on the taxi shortage in Dublin.
Currently, trams don't operate between 1am and 5am each night.
Christina Finn, Political Correspondent with the Journal.ie, says the NTA has rejected the idea as line maintenance is carried out in the early hours of the morning;
"The excuse that the NTA is giving that the reason they can not extend the Luas service beyond that time period of perhaps pushing it out to a 24-hour period, like a lot of other European cities, is because they carry out much-needed maintenance on the line between those hours that the trams are offline such as overhead wires and cleaning"
