Irish students hoping to spend the summer Stateside have until the end of this month to get their application in. In February, the American Embassy in Dublin announced that Ireland was being allocated an extra 2,600 J-1 Summer Work and Travel slots for 2017.

That means a total of seven thousand Irish students have the opportunity to work in America this summer. The U.S. Embassy in Dublin said it is "fully committed to the success of the J-1 programs in Ireland".

In addition to the popular Summer Work and Travel program, Irish students can participate in the Camp Counselor, Au Pair, and Intern programs. Since 2016, a pre-placement policy means all students must have arranged placements before getting to America for the summer.

The J1 programme has been running for over 50 years, and over 150,000 people have taken part. Those interested in applying for the Summer Work and Travel program this year are advised to begin their application as soon as possible.

Today, the U.S. Embassy in Dublin warned students that "a limited number of slots are still available, although applications must be submitted by the end of this month."

More information can be found on the U.S. Embassy’s website here.
