A Dublin icon turns 40 today.
The DART, now as synonymous with the city as the River Liffey, made it's first journey from Bray at 8am on July 23rd 1984.
Its estimated 35,000 people travelled on the brand new service on the first day, long before the Luas was ever crisscrossing it's way through the capital.
Ronald Reagan was US President, workers in Dunnes Stores had just gone on strike over South African products and Two Tribes by Frankie Goes To Hollywood was top of the charts.
The DART is 40 today! To our 670 million customers over the last 40 years, thank you!
We'll have lots of memories and surprises today, so stay tuned! #DART40 pic.twitter.com/JSoZOiUmv6— Iarnród Éireann (@IrishRail) July 23, 2024
Initially, the Dublin Area Rapid Transit line ran between Howth and Bray in Wicklow, before an extension to Malahide and Greystones.
While extensions are on the horizon to Drogheda, Hazelhatch and Maynooth in the near future.
