Dublin is facing a shortage in teachers as they leave the capital due to rising cost of living pressures.
According to the Sunday Independent, one school in South Dublin lost six teachers this summer alone.
The Association of Secondary School Teachers, Ireland says young educators leaving is a major problem, with many emigrating or moving outside the city.
ASTI General Secretary Diamuid de Paor says some subjects are being hit harder than others. "There's a crisis in certain subjects nationally particularly the STEM subjects, the modern languages, Home-Economics and Irish and it's particularly difficult in Dublin."
"Teachers who get a job in Dublin and get offered a job elsewhere will do their sums and calculate what their standard of living will be, and they will opt for the job down the country or abroad," de Paor says.
The Union says it is adding to an existing shortage in staff in acute subjects, and believe the cost of rent and mortgages is leading to teachers to finding jobs elsewhere.
