An Taisce Warns Allowing Ireland's Tallest Building Will Ruin City Views

Property developer Johnny Ronan has got the green light to build Ireland's tallest building beside Tara Street train station.

22 storeys high and 88 metres tall, the new skyscraper would be taller than Capital Dock on Sir John Rogerson's Quay and even Dublin Airport's new control tower.

An Bord Pleanála approved the plan on appeal, but it's split opinion.

Heritage group An Taisce say it will ruin views over Dublin's historical Georgian core.

It says it undoes decades of planning control in the city, and will have a negative impact on Trinity College, the Quays, College Green and O'Connell Street.

An Taisce's Advocacy Officer Ian Lumley says it would cause a complete change to Dublin's skyline.

"The real worry is not just this building, [but] the dramatic impact which is going to have. Liberty Hall is 16 storeys, this is 22 -- but storeys of modern buildings, particularly the office space part of this, are higher than 1960s buildings."

"This would, if were to proceed to construction, would have a dramatic impact on Dublin as we know it," he said.

But Graeme McQueen from Dublin Chamber of Commerce says it'll be a new landmark for the capital.

"It's going into an area that I think is right for this kind of development. Getting rid of the building height caps in the last few months has left the door open for this kind of thing."

"It's a really good move, it's going to be a mixed-use development, something that hopefully will act as a catalyst for other really good development to happen in the city centre," he said.
