People are being told not to swim at Seapoint beach in south Dublin until next week.

An advisory notice has been upgraded to a ban after tests on the water quality came back as poor.

The results indicated an increase in the levels of bacteria as a result of overflows from the wastewater network.

The prohibition notice will last until next Tuesday.

People are also being advised not to swim at Velvet Strand in Portmarnock after heavy rain. The notice is valid for four days.

Another water sample is to be taken today.
