It's emerged St. James' Hospital tried to buy Mount Carmel, but NAMA turned it down.

The private maternity unit in Churchtown was liquidated last month, with the loss of almost 400 jobs.

The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation has been talking about the current situation for affacted staff.

It's been invited to appear before a panel of politicians at the Oireachtas Health Committee in Leinster House.

The Health Minister, Dr. James Reilly, has stood by NAMA's rejection of the suggestion, saying it doesn't have the power to negotiate a deal.

The committee also heard that 64 members of staff are still negotiating their redundancy terms.
