Snow is being forecast to fall over parts of the country today.
Met Éireann says rain will turn to sleet and snow over Munster and Leinster later on. Forecasters expect the sleet and hill snow to gradually clear southwards tonight.
The day is expected to be cold, with top temperatures of 4 to 8 degrees nationwide.
However meterologist Liz Walsh says Dublin is more likely to see sleet;
"It is cold enough today in fact to see some wintry falls later on. We could see some sleet and slow around mainly in parts of Munster and south Leinster"
Lower temperatures, normally seen in January and February, are expected to persist for the rest of the week and into the weekend.
Met Éireann says frost and ice could also be an issue over the coming days.
Separately a status yellow rain warning has been issued for seven counties.
Carlow, Kildare, Kilkenny, Laois, Wicklow, Offaly and Tipperary are all under the warning from two o'clock this afternoon.
National Forecast For Wednesday
A few dry spells in the northeast but generally cloudy with showers or longer spells of rain, heavy at times with a risk of hail and thunder. Top temperatures 5 to 8 degrees. Some of the rain will turn to sleet and snow in parts of Munster, Leinster and Connacht, mainly later this afternoon and evening. Brisk northwest winds will develop in the southwest later today, but winds will be lighter and more variable elsewhere.
