The referendum to scrap the Seanad has been defeated.
The Government lost by 51.7% against, to 48.3% for.
All of the Dublin City and County constituencies rejected the proposal and proved too strong for it to be carried.
The people voted to reject the Government's proposal to abolish the Seanad as follows:
TOTAL VALID VOTES: 1,226,374
IN FAVOUR OF ABOLITION: 591,937
AGAINST ABOLITION: 634, 437
MAJORITY: 42,500
These people on the streets of Dublin told 98FM News they were pleased with the decision to save the Seanad:
Meanwhile, Irish voters have agreed to set up a new Court of Appeal.
Yesterday's Referendum asked th public if they wanted onlythe most serious cases to be sent to the Supreme Court in future.
The answer was an overwhelming yes - with almost two thirds of voters backing it.
