Frankfurters, chorizo and pepperoni have a much higher risk of causing bowel cancer than traditional Irish sausages.
Researchers at Queen's University have conducted a study on the cancer risk of processed meats.
The World Health Organisation names all processed meats as a carcinogen, but researchers say it's time for a separate classification for those containing nitrites, which give processed meat a bright pink colour.
Dr William Crowe from the Institute of Global Food Security at Queens University says meats like salami are much worse:
"When we evaluated the research and divided it into studies that had only looked at nitrite containing processed meats, so meats like frankfurter and salami, we found the relationship was much stronger. Whereby the link between processed meat and colorectal cancer was much stronger."
He went on to say that it might be possible to eliminate nitrites from processed meats.
