A revised proposal to build a hotel over the Cobblestone pub in Dublin has been submitted, in a bid to get the project over the line.

Almost 700 objections were lodged over the original plan for the well-known trad bar on King Street in Smithfield.

A 9-storey 114-bed hotel above the protected structure faced significant backlash from the public, prompting a number of protests.

Singers Imelda May and Glen Hansard were among those who came out against the plans, saying the city without the Cobblestone is a lesser place. While the Tánaiste Leo Varadkar said the planning permission should be refused.

It was eventually rejected by Dublin City Council last November.

Under the new proposal that has been submitted to An Bord Pleanála, the scheme would be seven-storeys and the entire bar would be retained, according to the Herald.

The backroom, that is used for teaching, rehearsing and performing traditional music, will be still be removed.

However the new plan proposes relocating it, creating a purpose-built performing space within a yard at the back of the site.
