Rent pressure zones will be extended until the end of 2021.
They were first introduced in 2016, in an attempt to stop tenants being ripped off.
However, the government has been widely criticised for not enforcing the rules.
Within designated zones, landlords shouldn't be allowed to raise rents by any more than 4% a year.
There are a number of loopholes which can see prices rise by more than that, including after extensive renovations are carried out.
Some landlords have been accused of making minor improvements to properties to increase the rent by more than 4%.
This morning, Cabinet Ministers agreed Rent Pressure Zones will remain in place until the end of 2021.
It had been hoped they would no longer be needed by the end of this year.
However, rents are continuing to rise higher and in more areas.
Just this week, Navan was declared a Rent Pressure Zone.
The Housing Minister has promised to do more to ensure the rules are being enforced.
