A public lido or outdoor pool has been proposed by Dublin city council where a white-water rafting facility was initially planned.
The controversial project at George's Dock was scrapped last year after public opposition and a failure to secure government funding. Councillors had initially supported the plan which was due to cost €12 million but ballooned to €23 million.
Instead, a multi-use area, including a 50 metre outdoor pool that would be open year-round, has been presented to the Central Area Committee. The facility would include pools for children and diving in the summer, which would be covered in the winter to allow for ice rinks, a Christmas market and concerts.
An emergency services training centre, including a rescue village, also forms part of the plans.
The project is estimated to cost at least €25 million.
But councillor Nial Ring believes it's the original idea, just under a different name;
"I see it's called H2O, it should be H2O 2 because it is a reiteration of the previous plan to a certain extent. We're shown four options and then there's a preferred option and I'd like to know whose preferred option, certainly not the public's, certainly not the councillors."
The other ideas for the site included a park and an Olympic-sized pool.
