Pub owners can't be expected to police Dubliners going outside of the county for a drink.

That's the view of the Vintners' Federation of Ireland which says many publicans are relieved to be reopening today.

There are concerns that people living in Dublin will travel to neighboring counties for a pint, as pubs in the capital are forced to remain closed.

Publicans in the capital will have to wait at least another three weeks before they can pull a pint.

Outside of the city though pubs will be operating under a strict table service policy and customers must maintain a distance from one another.

Wayne Harding from the Village Inn Pub in Slane, Co. Meath says he's prepared to intervene if people are table-hopping.

"There is huge implications in re-opening, like it's after costing us thousands to re-open."

"People can stay as long as they want, as long as they're spacing out by two metres."

"I'm the Covid appointed manager, I have to tell people if they're mixing too close."

"Like, I want the pub to be open but I also want people to come in and be safe."

Pub Owners And Staff "Are Not Police" - Cribben

Chief Executive of the Vintners' Federation Padraig Cribben says people need to exercise personal responsibility.

"Well our members are not police people."

"There's no need for them to become police men or police women overnight."

"Really it's up to personal responsibility on behalf of people."

"Personal responsibility needs to be exercised, the fact that you see a Dublin reg' car coming in doesn't necessarily mean that you have somebody coming from Dublin."
