A court has heard a professional MMA fighter attacked a woman who had told him she didn’t want to be in a relationship with him.
John Redmond, of Applewood Avenue, Swords, Co Dublin, admitted a charge of assault causing harm and was handed a fully suspended sentence.
Despite only meeting up a few times, the court heard John Redmond had become infatuated with the woman and used to tell people she was his girlfriend.
She had made it clear she just wanted to be friends.
Redmond used to send her abusive text messages when he was out and on the 2nd of September 2019, she called to his house to speak to him.
When he saw her outside, the Mixed Martial Arts fighter came out and launched an attack.
He pushed her down on the ground and when she got back up, he pushed her again and she was left dazed after hitting her head when she fell against a wall.
The judge was told he was drinking at the time and was ashamed and apologetic for what he did to the woman.
The 38 year old offered her €5,000 as a token of remorse, which she accepted, and the judge fully suspended his 18-month sentence on a number of conditions, including that he has no contact with the woman.
