For the twelfth year running, Jack is the most popular name given to newborn boys.

CSO figures show, for the eighth year in a row, Emily is the most popular girl's name.

The statistics show 686 Jack's were born last year, while 460 parents chose the name Emily for their baby girl.

Some new names crack in to the top 100 most popular names for 2018.

They are Frankie, Freddie, Theodore, Ada, Bella, Bonnie and Ivy.

Jack was followed by James, Noah, Conor and Daniel.

Emily was followed by Grace, Emma, Sophie and Emilia.

Muhammad and Sophia were the top names chosen by parents from outside the EU.

50 years ago John and Mary were the most common baby names in Ireland.

This year they've slipped down the charts to 27th and 58th place respectively.

Not one of the top 10 most popular girls names in 2018 were in the top 100 half a century ago.
