A poison used to execute death row inmates in the US has been stolen from a veterinary clinic in Co. Kildare.

Gardai are warning the public that it’s a toxic substance and isn’t intended for human consumption.

Sometime between 8.30pm on November 5th and 5PM the following day, a veterinary clinic in Celbridge was broken into.

A number of items were taken including a product called ‘Release’ which is used to put animals to sleep.

The Irish Medicines Board is very concerned about the theft of this item because it contains a highly poisonous substance called Pentobarbital.

The sedative is controversially used in high doses to execute death row inmates in some states in America.

The Release product was in a 100 mill clear glass bottle with an orange and white label and it’s believed there was around 15 mills of Pentobarbital in it when it was taken.

Gardai are anxious to recover the poison and have asked anyone with information to contact their local station.

The Irish Medicines Board is advising anyone who may have ingested it to contact the Poisons Unit at Beaumont Hospital.
