Plans to develop a cycle route on the quays of the River Liffey are to be shelved after projected construction costs soared from €20 million to €100 million, according to the Irish Times.

The path - which would extend from the Phoenix Park to the Tom Clarke Bridge and involve the construction of boardwalks over the river - has been in planning for a decade.

It was said in 2019 that construction would not be completed until at least 2024, but Owen Keegan, CEO of Dublin City Council, says it is now unlikely the project will ever go ahead.

Danny Byrne, a councillor for the South East Inner City area, described the decision as a disappointment, but not unexpected: "It beggars belief that this is in the pipeline for 10 years, and it's no surprise that the costs have gone up so significantly but it's really deeply deeply disappointing."
