An 8 acre site in Cherrywood in Dublin is to be turned into Ireland's first dedicated winter sports and entertainment venue.
The €190 million development will include two Olympic-sized ice rinks, a training centre for elite athletes and a 5,000-seater indoor arena.
The state-of-the-art facility would be home to Dublin’s first professional ice hockey franchise, allowing players to compete in the UK ice hockey league.
Dermot Rigley from Prime Arena Holdings says they hope to lodge a planning application later this year after reaching a deal to acquire the site off the M50;
"You could host NBA, ATP tennis, exhibition games, things like that but also have concerts. But it's also open for the community and it's also potentially a base for winter sports in Ireland.
Because what we realised very quickly is that we compete in the winter Olympics but there's no actual base for athletes."
It's hoped work could start in 2026 if planning permission is granted, with the multi-purpose venue open by the end of 2028.
