A planning application has been lodged for almost 600 new homes in South Dublin.

More than half of the new builds at Shanganagh will be cost-rental homes.

91 of the homes will be available to buy under an affordable housing scheme.

The planning application includes 51 terraced, semi-detached and detached houses and 546 apartments.

There will be two 4-bed homes, 99 3-bed homes, 302 2-bed homes, 161 1-beds and 29 studios.

The complex has been designed to cater for a wide range of family types, from large families to single people.

The proposed development also includes a creche, playgrounds, a gym, a convenience store, communal working spaces and a café.

There will also be parking spaces for 1,318 bikes and 365 cars.

John Coleman, Chief Executive of the Land Development Agency, hopes the project helps people "that otherwise would struggle to pay rent".

"Is also demonstrates our focus on delivering high-quality homes, built to the highest standards and adhering to the latest sustainable design techniques", he said.

"We will work as fast as we can, subject to getting planning approval, to deliver these homes and help to alleviate the shortage of supply in south Dublin as a matter of urgency".

The site will be within 5 to 10 minute walk of a proposed DART station at Woodbrook.

It's hoped building can begin early next year, once the project gets approval.
