A new €10 million euro plan to clean up a long-running illegal dump in north Dublin has been unveiled.
Residents living beside the mountain of waste in Darndale have described it as hell on earth.
This illegal mound of rubbish is believed to have been growing for 15 years on an empty site at the back of houses, stretching between Moatfield Court and Belcamp Gardens.
Locals say there's been an influx of rats with truck-loads of mostly commercial waste being dumped there every day.
Dublin city council says it hopes to clear the waste within four months with a contractor brought in to remove and treat the rubbish and secure the site.
The Irish Independent reports Gardaí will be trained under the Waste Management Act and CCTV cameras installed. A wall may also be built around the site.
Once cleared, the local authority is to look for Approved Housing Bodies to build public housing on the land.
