A Dublin restaurant owner has welcomed plans to allow people to claim back money spent on eating out.

It's being proposed as part of a government stimulus package to encourage people to holiday at home and give the tourism sector a boost.

The subsidy is expected to allow families to reclaim a portion of their hotel or restaurant bill.

Gina Murphy from Hugo's on Merrion Row says it's good news but they need to see more of the details.

She thinks it would be easier if restaurants could give a discount at the till and then apply for a refund rather than the customer;

"I think there's a huge owness and burden being put on the consumer here, which is very cumbersome. That you would have to collect all your receipts and then at the end of a particular period time you send them in and get something off your tax or whatever."
