Painting is to start on Dublin's iconic Poolbeg chimneys next month after an investigation concluded they were structurally sound.

The red and white towers, that were built in the 1970s and were only meant to last 25 years, are to be maintained for the foreseeable future.

The 207 metre stacks are no longer in use and were previously part of the site’s oil power station.

The towers have become landmarks in the city and have been immortalised in artwork from greeting cards to t-shirts and mugs.

The ESB says the paint job will start in August and it's expected the makeover will take until next year to complete.

Over the last number of years, a maintenance programme has included chimney inspections, placing caps on the tops of both towers to minimise water ingress, and detailed engineering assessments of the foundations.
