Dublin Bikes has racked up over €2 million in losses in just three years.
The capital's popular rental scheme lost almost €292,275 in 2019, followed by €972,556 in 2020.
Last year the losses, which Dublin City Council covers, stood at €828,924.
But Independent councillor Nial Ring thinks the benefits outweigh the costs;
"2 million over three years for Dublin Bikes on the face of it seems like quite a significant amount of money but in those three years there would have been approximately 10 million journeys taken on Dublin Bikes.
I think looking at it as a subsidy of less than 20 cent per journey it seems actually excellent value."
The scheme, which was launched in 2009, last year saw the introduction of e-bikes. Half of the fleet's 1,600 hundred bikes became electric.
The annual fee to use the regular bikes is €35 a year and €60 to use e-bikes.
