The head of the HSE says 18,000 people have availed of walk-in COVID-19 vaccination centres this weekend.

Paul Reid says 50% of those were aged 16 to 17 years old.

Walk-in centres continue to operate today in 26 locations, with the service open to anyone over 16 who has yet to receive their first dose.

Around 2.1 million doses have been administered over the last six weeks alone.

Around 87% of adults in Ireland have had at least one dose of a vaccine, while 73% of adults are now fully vaccinated.

UCD Professor Julien Mercille - who is a member of the Independent Scientific Advocacy Group - says the walk-in centres have been a success.

He said: "Young people are really queuing up - that's really good.

"We always say it's not too difficult to vaccinate 60-70% of your population with time, but it's really hard to get to 90-95%.

"In Ireland, we have a really big advantage here - people want to be vaccinated."
