Over a third of Irish female politicians have been threatened with rape or sexual violence.
96 per cent of those surveyed by NUI Galway say they've received some form of online abuse.
One female politician had human faeces thrown at her in a park, while another was threatened with an acid attack.
Dublin's Lord Mayor Hazel Chu says she's been on the receiving end of some very abusive messages:
"This accumulated to a mass pile on over a period weeks to then become a man standing on a street with a microphone calling for my deportation."
@hazechu on the awful online abuse she has suffered in office, which only serves to deter women from a public career in politics: "It got to the stage where I was asking 'Should I be here?' and I was so worried for the safety of my family and my child." #StopOnlineAbuse pic.twitter.com/qvGJZDyTXO

Senator Regina Doherty says she got a threat that her house would be burned down with her four children inside, because of something she said on television.
Thank you to @thatginamiller @MariaWalshEU @hazechu @OrlaNWCI @Colmogorman & @tomfelle for adding your voices to the important discussion on #womeninpolitics and online abuse today. We all have a role to play to #StopOnlineAbuse pic.twitter.com/V58BVevplB
