One of the large trees lining O'Connell Street in Dublin will have to be cut down after being damaged in the riots.

The 40 ft London Plane caught fire when a bus and Luas tram were set alight last November. A second tree may have to be removed after also being damaged during the violence.

In an update to councillors, Executive Parks Superintendent Ludovic Beaumont said the damages are too extensive and one of the trees "must be removed for health and safety in the coming weeks."

He says the health of the less damaged tree will be monitored.

Green party councillor Janet Horner says its a real pity; "We're trying our best to green the city at the moment, to bring in more greenery, to bring in more natural beauty I guess to the city centre and instead of that we're losing some really precious trees all over the place due to criminal damage a lot of the time."
