Quicksand warning signs are to be installed on a number of north Dublin beaches.

People are being told not to try to walk or swim across Baldoyle Bay, a notorious blackspot for dangerous currents and sinking sand.

Last Friday afternoon a teenage boy had to be rescued after clinging to a buoy in the area for half an hour.

Two others had also been reported getting into difficulty while swimming at Cush Point however all three were unharmed.

Social Democrats councillor Joan Hopkins says it's become more of an issue in recent months as the weather improved and more people from outside the area visited.

She says three beaches at Portmarnock, Sutton and Baldoyle meet to form Baldoyle Bay;

"When the tide is out it looks like it's easy to cross over and it isn't it's really, really dangerous."

She has asked Fingal county council to install warning signs, which the local authority has approved.
