Nóra Quoirin's parents have settled a case against Facebook and one of its users over a series of posts made after their 15-year-old daughter went missing in 2019.

In a statement, Facebook expressed its sympathy for the 'distress and trauma' caused by that user's allegations.

Nóra Quoirin went missing while holidaying in Malaysia with her family in August 2019. Her body was found in a jungle nine days later.

Last year, a Malaysian court overturned an inquest verdict of misadventure in favour of an open verdict, leaving open the possibility of further police investigation.

This legal action arose out of material posted on Facebook by retired Dublin solicitor, Anne Brennan, in the course of Nóra’s disappearance and the discovery of her body.

'Disturbing and Offensive'

Nóra’s parents, Meabh and Sebastien, claimed the comments were grossly defamatory of them.

Facebook described them as 'disturbing and offensive' to the Quoirin’s and expressed its sympathy for the distress and trauma arising from the allegations.

The settlement details are confidential but afterwards, Meabh said they were glad to put this behind them so they can focus on finding justice for Nóra.

In its statement, Facebook also said it will 'continue its efforts in preventing the misuse of its platform and ensuring the safety of its users.'

Here's the full statement from Meta Platforms Ireland Ltd: "On the 4th August 2019, Nora Quoirin went missing while her family were on holiday in Malaysia.

"Tragically, her body was found nine days later.

"During what was a distressing time for the Quoirin family in the course of Nora's disappearance and in the aftermath of her subsequent discovery, a Facebook user posted a series of allegations that were disturbing and offensive to Nora's parents on the Facebook platform.

"Meta Platforms Ireland Limited appreciates that the user's allegations were distressing to the Quoirin family and takes this opportunity to express its sympathy for the distress and trauma arising from that user's allegations. Meta Platforms Ireland Limited will continue its efforts in preventing the misuse of its platform and ensuring the safety of its users."
