There won't be a headline concert this New Year's eve in Dublin.

Organisers are planning a new format, including music, food and bars along the quays after last year's gig had to be cancelled at the last minute.

The Dublin New Year's festival is undergoing changes for 2022 with a focus on the countdown and fireworks display along the River Liffey.

A spike in Covid cases forced last year's celebrations, which included a headline concert with Picture This, afternoon shows at Dublin Castle and a street party near St Stephen's Green, to be called off just days beforehand.

This year a family-friendly New Year’s Eve Matinée is planned with an earlier countdown at North Wall Quay from 4 pm, along with family entertainers and street performers according to the application for the outdoor licence.

The 30-minute performance will start at 6.30 pm building to the earlier countdown celebrations at 7 pm. There will be space for 24,000 people with tickets needed to attend.

The main event will kick off from 8pm on North Wall Quay and Sir John Rogerson Quay.

"This segment of the night will include a firework display on pontoons positioned in the River Liffey, from Samuel Beckett Bridge as far down as the Tom Clarke Bridge. In addition, there will be barge located on the east side of Tom Clarke Bridge which will fire aerial shots."

It will be followed by the official countdown to ring in the New Year.
