New TD Eoin Hayes Suspended From Social Democrats

Newly-elected TD Eoin Hayes has been suspended from the Social Democrats, after claims he misled voters.

The Dublin Bay South deputy told reporters yesterday he sold his shares in a company linked to the Israeli military before he got into politics.

However, he has since clarified he didn't sell them until July 2024 - a month after he was elected to Dublin City Council.

Deputy Hayes worked for the software company Palantir between 2015 and 2017.

As part of his salary package, Deputy Hayes - who is an outspoken critic of Israel's actions in Palestine - was given shares in the company.

Palantir provides software services to the Israeli Defense Forces.

During a press conference yesterday morning - that descended into a 20-minute row with journalists, he repeatedly said, while questioned by reporters, that he divested from the company in the last year, but refused to say when exactly.

Later in the afternoon, he issued a statement to clarify the shares, worth €199,000, were sold in July, and apologised "profusely" for "providing incorrect information."

The Social Democrats' deputy leader, Cian O'Callaghan, then released a statement to say the newly-elected TD was suspended from the party with immediate effect;

"This is a serious matter. It is imperative that the media, who hold politicians to account on behalf of the public, can rely on the information they receive from elected representatives."

Eoin Hayes is now facing pressure from some quarters to resign altogether.

The first-time TD secured the fourth and final seat in Dublin Bay South in last month's election, edging out Sinn Féin's Chris Andrews.

People Before Profit TD Paul Murphy has accused Deputy Hayes of hypocrisy;

"I think it matters when we go before the electorate that we tell the truth...and people are able to make a decision on that basis.

"I think the right thing to do here would be to come completely clean, to resign his seat, to give the money over to a Palestinian charity - then if he wants, stand for re-election on the basis of iLook, I made a terrible mistake'".

Eoin Hayes says he will sit as an independent TD when the 34th Dáil convenes for the first time on December 18th.
