The Government's considering new legislation which would allow couple's share maternity leave.

According to the Sunday Times, the coalition's proposing that mothers would be able to "gift" two weeks of their maternity leave to the child's father.

Another option being considered is allowing parents to step in and out of the 26 weeks' leave, to allow them to share the time more equally.

However, the Department of Social Protection says this scheme would be very difficult to manage, in terms of payments.
