The grading and CAO points system in the Leaving Certificate is getting ready for its first overhaul in more than 20 years.
The changes are expected to be brought in from 2017.
The new CAO system means that instead of the current ABC grading, students will be marked from H1 to H8 for higher level or O1 to O8 in ordinary level exams.
From 2017, the number of grades awarded to students will be reduced from 14 to 8.
Another expected change is that students who get between 30 and 39 per cent in an honours paper, will still be awarded points.
The Minister for Education Jan O’Sullivan is launching the new system today, which is designed to encourage students to take more honours level subjects in their leaving cert.
