For the first time in almost a decade CCTV is to be used to catch people illegally dumping in Dublin city.

But the new legislation will only allow the local authority to go after those who abandon rubbish from a car.

The first areas to see cameras installed will be in the north inner city at Belvedere Place, Sherrard Street Lower and Summer Street North.

Dublin city council official Bernie Lillis says they're limited in how they can use the CCTV and it will be difficult to catch and prosecute dumpers;

"We're only able to use the registration numbers of the vehicles. We will not be able to use any footage of people who are walking about the street with a bag in their hand who are dumping."

In 2014 the council fell foul of the Data Protection Commission after it installed CCTV at litter black spots in the city and erected a poster of dumpers with their faces blurred.

It led to an investigation and new laws being created.
