The Irish Prison Service spent almost €100,000 last year on Netflix and Sky subscriptions and installation costs.
According to the Irish Independent, Netflix was provided to prisoners in their cells last year due to increased Covid restrictions.
Prisoners can't choose what to watch on their cell TVs, instead the choice is made by management, while a charge is levied on them for the luxury.
A spokesperson for the IPS told the paper that:
“Prisoners serving sentences are very much isolated from society and access to televisions, radios and newspapers are important media sources to keep prisoners connected with society and their communities especially during the current pandemic."
2,117 TV's were purchased by the Prison Service last year at a cost of €293,754.
