Former President of South Africa Nelson Mandela has died.
The 95 year old passed away at home after battling a persistent lung infection.
Born in 1918, he became actively involved in the anti-apartheid movement in his twenties before joining the African National Congress in 1942.
Twenty years later, he and a number of ANC members were captured by police and following a court case, was jailed for life.
In 1990, he walked free from Robben Island and became President of the ANC.
He started negotiations with then President FW De Klerk to end apartheid and establish multi-racial elections in 1994.
Four years after his release from prison, Nelson Mandela became the first black President of South Africa.
During his time as leader, he formed a national unity government, established a new constitution and introduced a truth and reconciliation commission.
He only served one term and became an elder statesman - concentrating on the fight against poverty and AIDS.
He's been married three times: his second wife Winnie was with him when he left prison but they divorced in 1996.
He married his current wife Grace in 1998.
Nelson Mandela retired from public life in 1999 but continued his work to combat AIDS until retiring again in 2004.
Over recent months, lung problems stemming from his prison stay, lead to repeated infections and hospitalisation.
He passed away at his home in Johannesburg surrounded by his family as a nation and the world mourns Madiba.
