It's feared a number of mummified remains have been destroyed after a fire in the crypt of St Michan's Church in the city.

Gardaí attended the scene at around 4.30pm yesterday afternoon on Church Street in Dublin 7.

The fire was eventually put out by Dublin Fire Brigade and the area was made safe. No one was injured.

A man was later arrested in connection with the incident. He's being held at a garda station in the capital.

In February 2019 the crypt was broken into and the head of 800 year-old mummified remains, called 'The Crusader', were stolen but later recovered.

The crypt is also home to the mummified remains of the ‘Thief’ and a man who is reputed to have been buried alive, along with other remains whose origins are unknown.

A forensic examination has been carried out by Gardaí.
