The idea of moving Dublin Port out of the city, in order to free up space for housing, is too simplistic according to an academic.

Relocating the docks northwards towards Drogheda has long been proposed.

Those in favour of the move say it would offer space for residential and office developments.

But Niamh Moore Cherry, a Professor at the UCD School of Geography, says the costs would be huge;

"It's not just as easy as moving everything out and building housing. It leaves behind contaminated land, it leaves behind legacy infrastructure."

She says the cost of actually re-purposing the land for the kind of urban living that are sometimes described, including high-rise apartments, are absolutely phenomenal.
