For the first time in more than 20 years new casual trading licences for market stalls on Dublin's Moore Street are to be issued.
Four permits are being made available for the sale of high end produce/arts and crafts according to the Irish Times.
There's space for 70 stalls at the historic market but less than 20 remain after the council stopped handing out new permits in the late 1990s. It was to allow a shopping centre be built in the area but the plans fell through while subsequent proposals are yet to get off the ground.
A recent report found the market was in a vicious circle of decline and is lacking basic facilities such as toilets. It also highlighted inadequate power, water and lighting.
Last month a group of traders wrote to the council asking to surrender their licenses.
A working group is being set up to look at ways the market can be regenerated.
