Plans to revamp Stephen's Green Shopping centre have got a mixed reaction, with some describing the proposal as generic and a downgrade.

The €100 million project will see two storeys added, retail space reduced and offices included for the first time according to the Sunday Times.

While the landmark building's arched windows and dome roof would be replaced.

Planning consultant and Associate Professor of Town Planning in UCD, Tom Phillips, says not every building has to have a wow factor;

"The city would be wrong if every building was trying to scream out for attention so you need certain buildings to be understated other ones to be signature buildings."

He says civic buildings would need to have more of a wow factor "but does a shopping centre need to have a wow factor, probably not."
